Netflix has no plans offer live sports, according to Maria Ferreras, its VP business development for EMEA.
Speaking at a Q&A at IBC 2018, she added that there would be “nothing that we could do differently from a broadcaster”. However, it has been exploring sports from a documentary perspective.
Netflix has also been looking at different genres, such as talk shows in the US, but as these have been on a local level not everyone has been aware of it.
Ferreras said Netflix is committed to local originals and is working on around 100 in EMEA at present, as well as many in countries such as India.
Although Netflix is developing international studios in Madrid, it has no plans to buy any production companies.
Commenting on partnerships, she said the Netflix experience is the same everywhere, “but how you access it, pay for it will be very much a personal experience”.
In terms of deals, she said that one with Sky will start in the UK and Ireland at the end of the year. “If you can watch Netflix on Sky Q it will become a good experience.”
