Netflix is planning to run ads between episodes to subscribers in some territories.
Since launch Netflix has been commercial free, but now it appears the streaming service is to follow in the footsteps of broadcasters such as Sky, who already screen ads on their premium channels.
The news initially appeared through user reports that promotions for other series available on Netflix were interrupting the bingeing.
It was later confirmed in a statement released to Ars Technica: “We are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster.”
The promotions have been seen in both the UK and the United States.
At this stage no commericals have been seen for anything outside of the Netflix family.
Netflix also rebutted suggestions that the ads would be unskippable.
