Sport1 plans eSports channel

August 20, 2018 23.32 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

German commercial sports broadcaster Sport1 wants to launch a dedicated TV channel for the fans of computer and video games.

“It is correct that we are pushing ahead with the development of an eSports channel, and we are also talking to potential partners in this regard,” a Sport1 spokesman confirmed to German industry magazine DWDL.

No further details are provided at this stage, for example whether it will be a free-to-air or pay-TV channel. “We will announce details of the planned eSports channel in due course,” said the Sport1 spokesman.

It is not the first time that Sport1 is working on a new TV project. In November 2016, a free-to-air TV channel called Sport2 was announced, but it has not yet launched. There is currently no news on this project, according to the spokesman.
