Spain’s Telefónica has acquired the rights to LaLiga for the period 2019-2020.
As a result, reports El Economista, Movistar TV subscribers will be able to see all the league matches on the platform without the need for the telco to reach agreements with BeinSport or third-party content providers.
It adds that Telefónica is paying €980 million per year for each package of the rights, which is similar to the past. Although the net cost will amount to €2,940 million, it should be able to recoup over 5% through the commercial exploitation of the rights.
Telefónica was awarded three of eight (2,4 and 5) lots in a competition in which none of the lots achieved their reserve price.
A fourth (7) was awarded to Mediapro, with the total cost of the four being €3,421 million, or 15% more than that for the four equivalent lots in the previous three years.
Meanwhile, Mediapro has also renewed its agreement with LaLiga for international audiovisual rights at a cost of €4,485 million for the next five seasons.
