Paid streaming video on the rise in Germany

June 19, 2018 09.42 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Two out of five internet users in Germany (37%) stream films and series on paid video-on-demand portals such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Sky Ticket or maxdome.

In the previous year, it was only 29%. This is the result of a survey of 1,007 people aged 14 years and older on behalf of the industry association Bitkom.

Younger people between the ages of 14 and 29 are particularly keen on streaming video: In this age group, almost one in two (46%) stream series and films via paid portals now and then. Among the 30- to 49-year-old four out of ten (39%) do so, among the 50- to 64-year-olds still around one third (32%).

While in recent years mainly the younger internet users were attracted by flat rates for series and films, now also older people increasingly use the offers. In the 65+ generation, one in five internet users (20%) access films and series via paid video streaming services. In 2016 it was only 8%, in 2017 13%.

Four out of ten on-demand streaming users (40%) also use the download function allowing movies and series to be saved and viewed in offline mode.
