The rights to Italy’s top-flight soccer matches are up for grabs again after Mediaset failed to present the games governing body with the necessary financial guarantees.
In February, the contract to broadcast Serie A between 2018 and 2021 had been sold to the Spanish-Chinese group for €1.05 billion.
The league now intends to hold a private a sale – rather than re-running the previous tender – after rejecting a last minute offer from Mediapro. Whist Mediapro was able to guarantee the sum, this was only done through third parties, rather than the bank being sought by Serie A.
A series of package priced between €50 million and €1 billion will be on offer.
Mediapro is said to be planning to mount a new bid, whilst there is also guaranted interest from previous rights holders Sky and Mediaset.
