June 4, 2018 11.31 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Netflix is winning the race of foreign-owned VOD platforms in Poland but still remains considerably behind local services.

Data produced by Gemius/PBI and published by Wirtualne Media shows that among the leading platforms Netflix had 1,981,507 users as of April this year, up from 780,864 in the corresponding period in 2017. At the same time, ShowMax had 1,257,885, down from 1,696,273 in April 2017.

Significantly, HBO GO, another foreign owned service, saw its user number grow from 348,984 to 982,698 over the same period.

VOD.pl, the overall market leader, had 3,741,005 users (up from 3,473,609), and other strong performers included TVP.pl – VOD, up from 1,918,702 to 2,434,745.

Ipla.pl saw only modest growth (1,712,370), while the biggest fall was noted by Player.pl (down from 3,092,700 to 2,454,745).

As of this April, VOD.pl had the biggest reach (13,46%) and TVP.pl – VOD to most opens (40,009,507). The most average time spent viewing a service was with TVP.pl – VOD (4:37:23).

Netflix launched in Poland in January 2016 as part of a major global expansion, while ShowMax made its European debut in Poland in February 2017.
