Dutch incumbent telecom operator KPN is pulling the plug out of its OTT streaming live and on-demand platform Play.
KPN cites insufficiënt demand for the service, which was officially launched in November 2015. The service will stop on July 2, and all current subscribers receive the last month for free.
In a message to Play subscribers KPN wrote: “In 2015, we introduced KPN Play as an innovative new service to the Dutch TV market. We have seen that market demand has proved to be insufficient for this new way of watching TV. That is why we have decided to discontinue this service.”
KPN Play offered 25 linear TV channels, and on demand content, and was available for both iOS and Android. By using the app’s Chromecast functionality, KPN Play could also be viewed on a regular TV set.
The news follows T-Mobile decision to terminate its OTT service Knippr on June 1, 2018. A month earlier, Dutch OTT TV provider Mobile2Morrow (M2M) closed its service on May 1
