Virgin Media is to let go of up to 800 jobs as it closes its Swansea call centre.
552 staff and another 220 subcontractors will see their positions eliminated as the cablenet reduces its number of UK call centres from eight to four.
The Swansea site will be closed by autumn 2019.
Virgin’s operations will be centralised in Wythenshawe (near Manchester), Sheffield, Birmingham and Stockton (Teeside). Another centre in Nottingham will also close.
Tom Mockridge, chief executive of Virgin Media, said: “Last year Virgin Media began a three year property investment programme to create fewer, higher quality work places to better support our people, our business and growing customer base.
The Wythenshawe centre will be redeveloped as part of a £40 million redevelopment programme. A major new building along the Reading/M4 corridor will accommodate those currently based in Hook, Langley, Slough and Wythenshawe.
Smaller sites will now be acquired in Bellshill and Nottingham.
Virgin Media employs 14,000 staff across 100 UK sites.
