The value of Russia’s online video market grew by 60% to R7.7 billion (€105.3 million) in 2017.
Quoting TMT Consulting, Kommersant reports that although the number of service remained unchanged last year, the number of paying viewers increased by 30% to 2.6 million. On the other hand, the total number of viewers remained unchanged at 40 million.
TMT Consulting says that growth drivers in the sector are the popularity of paid content, the fight against piracy and expansion of partnerships between pay-TV operators and online video providers.
Ivi was the leading provider, claiming a market share of 32%, and was followed by Okko (17%), Megogo (13%), Amediateka (12%), Tvigle (7%) and Tvzavr (6%).
Last year, revenues from paid services exceeded those from advertising for the first time.
The OTT/VOD market as a whole is growing strongly in Russia.
If Youtube and Rutube are also taken into account, it expanded by 40% in 2017 to R11.6 billion.
