Ampere Analysis Barometer: Pay TV and SVoD in Australia

SVoD subscriptions in Australia growing strongly, according to new analysis from Ampere Analysis.

59.1% of Australian Internet users have at least one SVoD subscription – up more than eight points since Q3 2017. This is the strongest growth of any market under study.

Australia has the fifth highest proportion of SVoD subscribers after Denmark (71.4%), USA (71.1%), Sweden (69.6%) and the UK (60.0%).

SVoD subscriptions outpace Pay TV.

Internet users in Australia are more likely to have SVoD than Pay TV. The only other market where this is the case is Japan. Elsewhere Pay TV reigns supreme.

Overall 59.1% have at least one SVoD subscription, 34.3% have Pay TV and 26.3% have a premium channel subscription.

A more detailed look shows SVoD only is the largest proportion of the subscription TV market.

Multiple SVoD subscriptions are common.

Almost nine in 10 SVoD subscribers in Australia have Netflix (89%), followed by Stan (28%) and Foxtel Now (23%) Amongst SVoD subscribers Netflix.

Given these figures, it is not surprising that 93% of Stan subscribers and 88% of Amazon Prime subscribers also have Netflix.
