Contrasting fortunes for Telekom and Orange Romania

February 23, 2018 08.42 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Telekom Romania saw a fall in TV revenue despite a modest gain in subscriber numbers in 2017.

Results published by its parent company OTE show that the former declined by nearly 2%, while the latter grew by 0.4% to reach 1,470,341.

TV subscriber growth was much stronger in OTE’s home market Greece, where Cosmote TV ended 2017 with 524,770 customers, or 4.4% more than a year earlier.

OTE group’s revenues were 1.3% lower in 2017 at €3,857.1 million, and those in Romania 1.2% down at €970.7 million.

Meanwhile, Orange Romania’s cable and DTH service Orange Home TV ended 2017 with 398,000 customers, a 20% increase on a year earlier. Take-up of its broadband services increased by an even more impressive 60% to 187,000 over the same period.

Orange Romania notes that the launch of Orange Love at the end of last September led to a doubling of fibre-optic internet and cable TV sales compared to the previous quarter.

It also says that 2017 was a year in which the digitisation process accelerated, highlighted by the growing consumption of mobile data and connected products for both residential and business customers.
