Telefónica saw impressive growth in its TV business in Spain in 2017, driven by the repositioning of its convergent offer and improvement and segmentation of content.
The number of pay-TV accesses increased by 5% year-on-year to 3.8 million, with quarterly net additions standing at 81,000. Meanwhile, the number of Movistar Fusión accesses grew by 10% to a new record of 20.3 million, with pay-TV adding over 400,000 new ones to the total.
The number of Movistar Fusión customers as of year’s end stood at 4.4 million, equivalent to 87% penetration of the consumer TV base.
The Telefónica Group as a whole had revenues of €52,008 million in 2017, representing -0.1% (reported) and +3.4% (organic) change on a year earlier. OIBDA was €16,187 million (+7.1%, +5.3%) and net income €3,132 million (+32.2% reported).
Separately, Telefónica and Orange have signed a new commercial wholesale deal to access the incumbent’s FTTH network. It represents an extension of the current 2016 agreement on which Orange could continue accessing Telefónica’s network in no regulated areas defined by current regulation (April 2016).
Telefónica notes that it reached a similar agreement with Vodafone last year and is open to negotiations with other players.
