Kenya’s three top TV stations remain silent after police stopped the delivery a court order designed to restore their transmissions from being handed over.
Kenya Television Network, Citizen Television and Nation Television were preparing to cover a mock swearing in ceremony by opposition leader Raila Odinga as the fallout to the country’s disputed presidential elections continued.
Last Wednesday, interior minister Fred Matiangi said the three TV channels and a number of radio stations would remain of the air whilst they were investigated over what Matiangi described as an attempt to “subvert and overthrow” President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government.
By Thursday a high court judge had said that broadcasts from the three stations should resume and no further attempt be made to interfere with their transmissions until such time as a case could be heard against them.
The three channels between them take two-thirds of Kenyan audiences, preferred over public broadcaster KBC and K24, a news channel controlled Kenyatta’s family.
