Dutch fibre broadband subscribers may be getting more interested in a switch to cable, according to research by Telecompaper.
The research company’s annual survey previously found no such interest, but the situation has changed slightly in 2017.
In 2013 and 2014, there was zero interest among fibre subscribers to switch to cable. In 2015 and 2016, the figure was 1% of subscribers, and in 2017, this increased to 2%.
Telecompaper suggest that the increase may be due to the ongoing content battle between KPN and Ziggo. Cable operator Ziggo holds important sports rights, such as Formula 1, as well as the exclusive rights to HBO content. This could be driving more fibre customers to consider a switch to cable.
The survey also found that Telfort VDSL customers have much less interest in moving to fibre than KPN customers. Over a third (36%) of Telfort customers said they had no interest in fibre, compared to just 17% of KPN’s VDSL customers. The figure was 29% at Ziggo. A total of 11% of KPN customers said they want to switch from VDSL to fibre broadband in the coming year.
