A fifth of Netflix subscribers in the UK watched Stranger Things in the first week after the debut of the show’s second season.
Research organisation YouGov says that of the 6.5 million UK Netflix subscribers, 1.3 million tuned into the programme – either to watch the first series, or view the new episodes.
YouGov observes that Netflix dedicated a generous proportion of its marketing budget to the 80s-set fantasy series leading it to outperform other titles on the platform.
Rick and Morty is the series with the closest viewership with 6 per cent of subscribers, ahead of Orange is the New Black (4 per cent).
Stranger Things also appears somewhat addictive; over a third of subscribers watched one episode, 25 per cent viewed two, 12 per cent saw three while 10 per cent viewed over eight coming close to a whole series.
Additional YouGov data indicates that over half (54 per cent) of Netflix subscribers first joined the service in order to access original content – 37 per cent say it was to watch a specific TV series/programme and 28 per cent said it was in order to watch a back catalogue of a TV series.
