Practically all homes in Romania now receive pay-TV services.
According to the findings of a report by the regulator ANCOM, the figure stood at 98%, equivalent to 7.3 million subscribers, as of mid-2017. This was 2.5% more than in the same period last year.
The majority (4.9 million) of the total opted for cable, with 2.4 million choosing DTH and 106,000 IPTV.
While cable was more popular in urban areas, accounting for 82% of subscribers, 56% chose DTH in rural areas. Nationally, 66% of pay-TV subscribers received cable. Of the 4.9 million cable subscribers, 3.6 million (+3%) lived in urban and 1.3 million (+12%) in rural areas.
Meanwhile, the penetration rate of cable pay-TV services was 65% nationally (84% urban and 40% rural).
The number of digital pay-TV subscribers as of mid-2017 was 4.6 million (+3% year-on-year). Of these, around 2.4 million (+3%) were DTH, nearly 2.2 million (+10%) cable and about 106,000 (+20%) IPTV.
