Estonia’s government has expressed support for a plan to hold a public tender for building the last mile of a high-speed internet network.
According to the Baltic Times, such a network will reach remote parts of the country that the private sector is unwilling to invest in.
Quoting Urve Palo, the minister of entrepreneurship and IT, it adds that the €20 million set aside from the state budget to complete the last mile would only have been able to cover a few parts of the country.
Although EU funds have until now helped Estonia extend internet access to small towns and villages, they have not included the last mile.
Estonia aims to have the high-speed network fully accessible to all homes in the country by 2022.
