Walt Disney chief executive Bob Iger has said the new Disney streaming service will launch at a price lower than that of established rival Netflix.
In the UK market Netflix the price of a ‘standard plan’ is now £7.99 per month, while the top tier ‘premium’ subscription, including 4 simultaneous streams and Ultra HD content is £9.99. Basic stands at £5.99 and has not changed under a recent price increase.
Disney’s two-year old streaming service Disney Life is currently £4.99, half the price the kid-skewing platform was at launch, suggesting the House of Mouse has already leant from the project.
Iger admits the pricing is such because at launch it won’t have the content. “I can say that our plan on the Disney side is to price this substantially below where Netflix is. That is in part reflective of the fact that it will have substantially less volume.”
Disney is addressing this through original content that will include a TV show based on the Star Wars franchise, a new show featuring Marvel characters and a show based around High School Musical.
