Russia, Ukraine finally terminate TV deal

November 7, 2017 09.33 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

An agreement on cooperation between Russia and Ukraine in the field of TV and radio broadcasting has finally ceased.

Quoting a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, TASS and AKTR says that the agreement, signed in Moscow in October 2000, is no longer in place.

They add that the Ukrainian government terminated the agreement with the Russian government in November 2016.

The agreement “provided for the creation of favourable legal, organisational and economic conditions for the provision of broadcasting and distribution of programmes of Russian TV and radio broadcasting organisations in the territory of Ukraine and programmes of Ukrainian television and radio broadcasting organisations in the territory of the Russian Federation.”

The agreement allowed for the use of the Russian language in Russian programmes shown in Ukraine and vice-versa.
