Romania’s National Audiovisual Council (CNA) will decide at its next meeting if a Moldovan channel that shows programming from the Russian state broadcaster RTR (VGRTK) can be distributed in the country.
According to Balkan Insight, the operator of RTR Moldova, the channel in question, registered a branch in the eastern Romanian city of Iasi in May this year and subsequently applied for a licence to broadcast nationally via cable.
Since then, the CNA has twice delayed making a decision on RTR Moldova, which it is feared may spread Russian propaganda in Romania.
Although several Russian TV channels operate in Moldova itself, the news channel Russia 24 has been banned for the last three years.
