Netflix has more than doubled the number of subscribers in the Netherlands, from 1.1 million to 2.3 million, now reaching one in three Dutch homes, according to Telecompaper.
The research firm’s new report Video behaviour of Dutch consumers 2017 Q2 also shows that SVOD runners-up Videoland and RTL XL are lagging far behind, each with around 300,000 subscribers. So far Amazon Prime Video has nog made an impact on the Dutch market.
The number of minutes people spend watch on-demand series, films and documentaries has also doubled during the past two years, from 11 minutes to 23 minutes a day. However, people in their twenties watch even more on-demand per day, an average of 43 minutes.
Viewing behaviour is also changing because of YouTube, Facebook Video and the apps from Ziggo and KPN. People in their twenties watch 60% of their TV time on a regular TV set, 40% on desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone. The same group watches 40 minutes a day on their smart phone, a lot of it being streaming live TV.
According to Telecompaper, almost 1.8 million Dutch are now watching TV on their smart phone using the apps from Ziggo or KPN, the two main TV distribution platforms in the country.
