Swiss cable operators lose less TV customers

August 17, 2017 16.12 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

The Swiss cable operators have managed to slow down their TV customer loss.

On June 30, 2017, the companies had 2.41 million TV customers – 40,000 less than one year ago, according to cable operator industry association Suissedigital. In the year before, 129,000 TV customers turned their back at the cable operators.

Telephony and internet continue to record strong growth. The cable operators increased their number of fixed-line telephony customers in the past 12 months by 52,800 to 770,000 while the number of mobile network customers rose by 48,500 to 121,000.

29,500 customers opted for internet access, increasing the total number of cable internet subscribers to 1.25 million on June 30, 2017.

The main reason for the decline of classic cable TV customers is the strong competition with Swisscom. The telco won 96,000 new customers for its IPTV platform Swisscom TV in the past 12 months, increasing the total customer number to 1.45 million. That’s 7.1% more than one year ago. In Q2 2017, 9,000 new IPTV customers were added.
