MTV will be offered as an unencrypted free-to-air channel in Germany and Austria again from January 2018.
This was announced by parent company Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) in Berlin. “MTV reaches its fans wherever they are. Following the launch of our free-of-charge livestream at MTV.de which has been a great success among our viewers, the unencrypted distribution of MTV from next year is the next important step,” said Dr Mark Specht, General Manager Germany, Switzerland & Austria at VIMN.
Since March 2017, MTV has been available as a free 24/7 livestream at www.mtv.de/live. A new version of the MTV Play app for iOS and Android has also recently been launched granting viewers free-of-charge access to the livestream and MTV shows on mobile devices.
The encryption will only be dropped on the SD version of MTV. MTV HD continues to be offered as a subscription service on TV platforms in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
