TV drives Magyar Telekom results

August 3, 2017 10.03 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Magyar Telekom’s TV business put in a strong performance in its home market in the year to June 30, with revenues growing by 5.1% and the number of subscribers by 3.6%.

Revenues in the second quarter amounted to HUF10,433 million (€34.35 million), while the subscriber total stood at 1,006,241 as of June 30. Blended TV ARPU was also higher, up by 2.1% to HUF3,493.

In its latest set of results, the company notes that its new TV portfolio, launched in November 2016, and price increase on January 1 this year led to the increase in ARPU.

In other markets, Magyar Telekom’s Macedonian subsidiary had TV revenues of HUF824 million (+10%) in Q2, while its TV subscriber total stood at 112,436 (+6.6%). The group as a whole had revenues of HUF153,521 million (+8.9%) in Q2, with EBITDA at HUF47,856 million (-1.8%) and net profit HUF10,928 million (-5.8%).

In his comments on the results, CEO Christopher Mattheisen said: “During the quarter, we continued the roll-out of the company’s high speed internet network that now reaches over 2.9 million Hungarian households. As a direct consequence of the various initiatives introduced to increase fixed service subscriber numbers and capitalise on our upgraded network, we now have more than 600 thousand customers connected to our high speed internet network, whilst the number of TV customers exceeds 1 million. One example of such an initiative is the launch of a new brand, ‘Flip’, which is available in certain areas in Hungary where Magyar Telekom is typically not the preferred choice. Flip offers one very attractively priced 3Play package without any loyalty contract in exchange for simplified, online and self-care focused customer service”.
