Facebook is in talks with Hollywood studios with a view to producing scripted TV quality shows that could be available as soon as the summer.
The Wall Street Journal says the social network is willing to spend around $3 million an episode.
Facebook plans to target audiences between the ages of 13 and 34 with its core audience being between 17 and 30.
However, unlike Netflix and Amazon, Facebook plans to release its episodes on a traditional week by week basis.
Already, its commissioned a relationship drama, Strangers, and game show Last State Standing. The titles suggesting its focus is initially at least on the United States.
Earlier this month it emerged Facebook was funding a project led by Ricky Van Veen, co-founder of comedy site College Humor. It’s also attempting to revive Loosely Exactly Nicole a show that pulled MTV just 200,000 viewers in the United States.
