Well over half (57%) of Dutch people binge watch, viewing multiple episodes of a TV show in rapid succession.
The number of people who binge watch rose 9%from the first quarter of 2014 to Q1 2017. The number of people who have never engaged in the past time decreased in the same period, to 34% from 46%. The growing use of streaming video services has contributed to both developments, according to the latest study from Telecompaper’s Consumer Panel.
Downloading is becoming a less popular way to binge watch. Only 7% of panel respondents said they have downloaded a TV show over the past six months in order to binge watch. In Q1 2014, this was at 14%.
Meanwhile, streaming video content in order to binge watch is growing strongly, supported by services such as Netflix and Videoland. The growth of streaming as a way to binge watch exploded between 2014 (3%) and 2017 (24%). Recording TV shows has also become more frequent, helped by increased recording capabilities of cloud media players.

The percentage of binge watchers is largest among those in their 20’s. Among 20-29 year olds, 74% have binge watched a show in the last six months.
