Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has accused RCS&RDS (Digi) of money laundering and bribery.
Furthermore, reports Business Review, Serghei Bulgac, the current CEO of Digi, is being prosecuted for money laundering during the time he was general director of the company.
It adds that two smaller companies, along with several current and former managers, are also being investigated.
At the heart of the investigation is the sale of TV rights for Romania’s premier football league for the seasons 2008-2011.
It is claimed that RCS&RDS paid €3.1 million to Dumitru Dragomir, then the president of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), through a number of hidden transactions in order to get better terms for the deal.
The final contract between FRF and a consortium comprised of RCS&RDS and Intact Group’s Antena 1 was worth over €100 million.
RCS&RDS is the leading provider of pay-TV (cable and satellite) services in Romania.
