Viaplay may eventually become available on Android set-top boxes, according to Jonas Karlen, the company’s CEO.
However, speaking in a presentation and panel discussion at the Connected TV World Summit, he added that the most important thing right now was for Viaplay to be available on screens rather than boxes.
Indeed, it is already present on 90% of connected devices.
Karlen conceded that Viaplay, which made its debut as Viasat OnDemand in 2017, initially made many mistakes.
However, these were rectified when it was re-launched as Viaplay, introducing the first SVOD service in the Nordics, in 2011. The following year it launched in online mode and according to Karlen 92% of its content is now downloadable.
More recently, Viaplay launched EST in 2016 and undertook the first live Ultra HD broadcast in the Nordics this year.
Karlen added that Viaplay quadrupled its customer base between Q1 2013 and Q3 2016. Meanwhile, the number of Viaplay started streams increased 17 times between Q4 2012 and Q1 2017.
Looking at the SVOD market in general, Karlen said that Denmark would overtake the US to become the number one SVOD market in terms of household penetration by 2021.
Furthermore, the Nordic XVOD (EST, TVOD and SVOD) market is currently growing by 20% a year.
