BT looks beyond its “challenging year”

May 11, 2017 11.10 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

BT Sport gained 11,000 new TV customers in the quarter ending March 31.

As a result, its TV base rose to 1.7 million.

Meanwhile, its annual average annual audience figures increased 12% excluding Showcase and digital channels.

In its latest set of result, BT notes that it is rolling out a new User Interface for its TV customers, which is now in 1.3 million homes. Furthermore,in the first half of 2017/18 it are transitioning all customers on its legacy Vision TV platform to YouView. It expects this to adversely impact net additions as some customers may choose to cease service rather than move platform, and its decision to increase prices for Sport may also have an impact in the future.

BT’s revenues in the fourth quarter ending March 31 amounted to £6,122 million, a 10% increase on the same period last year. Adjusted EBITDA was £2,069 million (+2%) and adjusted profit before tax £1,031 million (-6%).

In his comments on the results, chief executive Gavin Patterson conceded it had been a challenging year for BT.

However, also said: “We aspire to be the UK’s digital champion. To achieve this, we’re ready to invest in the UK’s digital infrastructure, in continued improvements in our customer service, and in new technologies to further enhance customer experience. To that end, Openreach has today announced that it’s consulting with customers and industry stakeholders on the business case that could support better rural broadband and a large scale FTTH premises rollout across the UK.”
