Proposed law change hits Polish pay-TV market

April 11, 2017 09.07 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Polish cable operator Multimedia Polska has noted a reduction in pay-TV subscriber numbers as a direct result of proposed amendments to the law on receiver licence fees.

Quoting a statement provided by Multimedia, Press.pl adds that the company expects the losses to increase once the changes come into effect.

The proposed amendments will require pay-TV companies to provide information about their subscribers to the authorities in order to facilitate the collection of receiver licence fees to fund public service broadcasting in Poland.

They have already been strongly criticised by Cyfrowy Polsat and nc+, which operate the country’s two main DTH platforms.

Multimedia Polska is in the process of being acquired by Liberty Global’s UPC Polska, with the competition authority UOKiK examining the sale.
