Lithuania’s Radio and Television Commission (LRTK) has decided to suspend the Russian channel TVCI for one month.
In a statement, it says its decision will be effective after the authorisation of the Vilnius Regional Administrative Court.
LRTK adds that the move follows the transmission of a programme broadcast on January 27 that refered to developments around the world, including events in Lithuania in 1991, that was found to be biased and defamatory.
Executives from TV Tsentr, the company that operates the channel, met with LRTK on March 29 to discuss the issue.
Although willing to cooperate and comply with the laws of Lithuania, they also stressed the rights of journalists to express their opionions and could not guarantee that such an incident would not be repeated in the future.
