Netflix boss Reed Hastings says the company wants to be on any screensize available.
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress Hastings predicted that in 10 or 20 years all viewing will be conducted over the internet, and Netflix was excited to be at the forefront of that change.
“Five or ten years from now the quality of Netflix on all of your devices will just be incredible,” said Hastings, adding that the company’s true focus was on incredible storytelling, rather than on a particular screen size.
“We’re investing very heavily, at many levels, on the network servers, on the interconnect with different ISPs around the world, on the codec side, so the experience around the world on the mobile, on the laptop, on the TV is just instant.
“What we’ve done is invest in the codecs, the video servers, so at half a megabit you get incredible picture quality on a four or five-inch screen. Now we’re down in some cases to 300 kbps and we’re hoping to get down to 200 kbps.”
Netflix has 93.8 million subscribers worldwide, about half of which are international.
