SRG Switzerland remains on Hotbird

February 23, 2017 20.48 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Swiss public broadcaster SRG SSR will continue to transmit its TV and radio channels for DTH satellite households via Hotbird (13° East).

SRG has confirmed its long-term commitment to the Hotbird neighbourhood with the multi-year renewal of one transponder that complements a second transponder already booked on a long-term basis, according to satellite operator Eutelsat.

SRG SSR occupies the two Hotbird transponders to broadcast seven TV channels in HD quality to Swiss homes beyond range of quality terrestrial reception and for Swiss citizens living abroad: SRF 1, SRF zwei, SRF info, RSI LA 1, RSI LA 2, RTS Un and RTS Deux.

The capacity is also used for Hbb TV services and 26 SRG radio stations.

With the exception of SRF info, all TV channels are encrypted for copyright reasons; smartcards are only issued to Swiss citizens. The radio stations are unencrypted.

The TV channels are available solely in HD quality on Hotbird. The parallel SD transmissions were terminated in February 2016.
