Romania’s telecom market is unlikely to see any major transactions in 2017.
Quoted by ZF, Miroslav Majoros, the head of Telekom Romania, said “a significant move would involve an acquisition or a merger, and I do not see something coming in the horizon”.
Telekom Romania has recently focused less on acquiring small cable operators, instead being preoccupied with the merger and subsequent integration of the Romtelecom and Cosmote.
Such acquisitions have been pursued by RCS&RDS, UPC and even the regional/local operator AKTA.
Romania’s telecom market has annual revenues of around €3.2 billion.
Majoros also said that Romania’s smartphone penteration is likely to increase from the current 60% to 80% in the next two years.
This will create “a huge demand for mobile data services and digital content on phones and tablets”.
