Journalists at the all-news channel Sky TG 24 voted to strike for 24 hours in protest against 200 redundancies and the transfer of 310 employees from Cagliari to Rome and Milan.
The announcement by Sky’s management to move the editorial department of the 24/7 news channel came as a shock to the journalists and local politicians. Sky is a big employer in Cagliari on the island of Sardinia.
National Federation of the Italian Press and the regional journalists associations of Rome and Milan express “solidarity with the journalists” confirming “the commitment to make available all resources to find a solution to the affair.”i.
In solidarity with colleagues journalists of Mediaset said that “journalists of TG5 call for an urgent intervention of the government mediation and Parliament to protect the quality of information and employment in the media industry at a difficult time in the life of the country.”
Sky TG24 is Italy’s second all-news channel, the other one is from state broadcaster Rai, Rai News 24. Launched on July 31, 2003, it provides non-stop rolling news, weather forecasts and sports stories with half-hourly updates.
The interactive version of Sky TG24, called Sky TG24 Active, was launched in January 2005.
