Intel is to issue a firmware update after it emerged that an issue with its Puma 6-based modems is impacting on cable routers on both sides of the Atlantic.
Packet loss has been reported on the Arris Surfboard SB6190, the Compal CH7465-LG and the Hitron CGNV4. It is also affecting OEM units based on the Puma 6 chipset that include the Virgin Superhub 3.
The problems are particularly acute for customers using their modems for online gaming – although the devices are capable of running at speeds up to 1.6 Gbps problems are being reported on much lesser speeds.
Posts on the Virgin Media Community website suggested using it purely as a modem (bridge mode) would resolve the problem, though clearly the fix is not a long-term solution, given the average household has some 11 devices connected over Wi-Fi.
In Canada, Rogers Communications has been testing a possible fix, but the suggestion from posts on its own board are that there is a little way to go.
