Eurosport 1 HD to join HD+ on Astra [UPDATE]

November 28, 2016 09.40 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

SES-Astra_Betzdorf_dishesEurosport 1 HD will become available on German DTH platform HD+ via Astra (19.2° East) on December 1, 2016.

The HD version of the sports channel has so far been carried exclusively by Sky Deutschland for DTH households. Eurosport 1 HD will remain available on Sky Deutschland, as a spokesman of parent company Discovery Networks Deutschland told Broadband TV News, but not exclusively any more.

By terminating its exclusive carriage on Sky Deutschland, Eurosport 1 HD further expands its reach. The channel earlier announced its decision to drop exclusive cable carriage on the Sky platform.

“Through the expansion of our collaboration with HD+, we can now offer our full channel portfolio consisting of DMAX, TLC and Eurosport 1 to satellite customers in best HD quality,” said Alberto Horta, deputy managing director and vice president strategy & commercial development at Discovery Networks Deutschland.

Eurosport 1 HD will be transmitted by HD+ on the frequency 11.111 GHz H (SR 22,000, FEC 2/3). The platform operated by SES will then contain a total of 23 channels.

Update: Shortly after announcing the deal with HD+, Discovery unveiled the reason for its ambition to make Eurosport 1 available as widely as possible: The channel will show the Olympic Games exclusively in Germany between 2018 and 2024.
