The Polish public broadcaster TVP has ruled out launching a second sports channel.
Quoted by Wirtualne Media, its president Jacek Kurski said that it would instead develop its existing channel TVP Sport, which is currently distributed via cable and satellite.
He added that he supported the idea of introducing a HD version of TV Sport on the third DTT multiplex while at the same time moving two other proprietary thematic channels – TVP Kultura and TVP Historia – to the eighth multiplex.
Kurski also said he believed TVP already operated too many thematic channels and would propose a reduction in the number to the broadcaster’s board.
The decision about the second sports channel appears to contradict comments made by Maciej Stanecki, TVP’s VP, at the PIKE conference earlier this week in which he said that the broadcaster planned to offer a free to view sports channel on one of the three slots it has been allocated on the eighth multiplex.
Earlier this week, Zoom TV, the first of four new thematic commercial TV channels, launched on the latter. It will be followed by three more – Nowa TV, WP and Metro – before the end of the year.
