Romania’s pay-TV penetration stood at almost 96% as of mid-2016, according to a statistical data report produced by the regulator ANCOM.
There were 7.2 million subscribers to pay-TV services, or 5.5% more than a year earlier.
Of these, 4.6 million opted for cable, 2.4 million DTH and 89,000 IPTV.
Of the 7.2 million pay-TV subscribers, 60% (4.3 million) lived in urban and 40% (2.9 million) in rural areas. Cable was most favoured in the former (75% of all cable subscribers), and DTH (59%) in the latter.
Digital services continued to grow in popularity and were received by around 4.5 million of the 7.2 million subscribers. The number of digital subscribers increased by 8% over the year to 63% of the total.
DTH accounted for the majority of digital subscribers (54%, 2.4 million), followed by cable (44%, or 2 million) and IPTV (2%, 89,000).
The number of digital cable subscribers increased by 10% over the year, with DTH and IPTV posting respective increases of 5% and 28%.
