Spain’s Telefónica plans to enter into agreements with major TV manufacturers in order to make Ultra HD more popular.
El Economista reports that the move, which was announced by Luis Miguel Gilpérez, the company’s president, should make Ultra HD a mass phenomenon by 2018.
It adds that the telco will produce receivers and decoders, as well as launch its own 4k TVs, in line with a partnership it currently has in place with the manufacturer Vestel.
Furthermore, the telco plans to have one million subscribers for its Movistar 4k TV service by 2018, as well as to boost both the production and acquisition of content in the format.
4k content will be made available by Telefónica to viewers not only on TVs but also tablets, PCs and smartphones.
