Netflix not available to Telenet customers – for now

September 16, 2016 11.07 Europe/London By Robert Briel

NetflixDespite Liberty Global’s announcement of a global deal with Netflix, Belgian Telenet customers might be left in the cold.

Telenet’s spokesperson Isabelle Geeraerts told Belgian press that the operator, which is majority-owned by Liberty Global, has not yet made its mind up to include the Netflix app in its set-tops.

Telenet’s current STBs are not able to offer IP-delivered streams such as Netflix, but the operator will launch the Horizon box next year.

However, Geeraerts told De Tijd “There is no preliminary integration of Netflix in our decoders, not even in the new generation that is coming next year. That is something we have to think about it, it is too early to make any announcements about that. ”

Meanwhile, Telenet’s competitor Proximus, the former incumbent Belgacom, has integrated Netflix in its set-tops since the launch of the service in Belgium. For the time being, Telenet customers continue to need a Google Chromecast, Apple TV or smart Tv with the Netflix app in order to watch the SVOD service.
