The EBU has strongly condemned a grenade attack against Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK) on Monday, August 22.
In a statement, it says that according to RTK, a hand grenade was thrown into their courtyard around 22.00, close to their antennas. Fortunately there were no casualties. Police are still investigating who might be responsible for the attack.
EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre said: “Physical attacks and threats against media and journalists are unacceptable in a democratic society. RTK is an independent public institution serving the whole of society and should be left to do its important work free from fear and intimidation”.
Mentor Shala, DG of RTK, added that RTK has an important mission to inform society about all developments in the political, social and cultural life of Kosovo and present different opinions and voices in a pluralistic and balanced manner.
“There has been a lot of pressure on RTK recently. I believe that politicians should provide a secure environment for RTK; ensure adequate, fair, and sustainable funding; and resolve the ongoing property issue.
“RTK is committed to serve all the audience and fulfil its remit to society and will not submit to any threats.”
The EBU concluded its statement by calling on all relevant authorities to duly and timely investigate the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.
