Bosnia’s House of Representatives has decided not to adopt a draft law on amendments to the Law on the Public Broadcasting System of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Local reports say that the amendments, which would have resulted in the collection of receiver licence fees through electricity bills, failed at its second reading and was opposed by representatives of Republika Srbska.
Had the amendments been approved, 40% of the funding obtained from receiver licence fees and advertising would have been allocated to BHRT, with the remainder split equally between RTRS and FBiH.
As previously reported by Broadband TV News, the Bosnian public broadcater BHRT, which acts as an umbrella body for RTRS and FbiH, is under serious financail pressure and faces the prospect of closure.
Its plight has caused serious concern at the EBU for a number of months.
