The UEFA Euro 2016 provided Zattoo with a new user record: A total of 1.8 million viewers watched the games on the OTT platform, more than 800,000 of them in Germany.
One of the reasons for the growth is the strongly increased usage of the streaming service on regular TV sets which was 10 times higher than during the FIFA Football World Championship 2014, according to the company.
The match with the most viewers in Germany was the final between Portugal and France, marking a new record figure for simultaneous TV streams on Zattoo.
A quarter of the TV consumption during the Euro 2016 through Zattoo took place using TV sets connected to the internet, further narrowing the gap to smartphone/tablet usage (35%) and web usage (40%).
“The figures show that TV streaming also establishes itself as an alternative next to traditional reception methods for the TV set in the living room,” said Jörg Meyer, chief officer content und consumer at Zattoo.
According to a recent study, around half of Germans consider solely streaming their TV channels through the internet in future.
