Liberty Global is building new test suites in continental Europe to simulate coverage of services such as in-home Wi-Fi.
Speaking at Cable Congress in Warsaw, Dan Hennessy, chief technology officer, Liberty Global said the new homes would emulate those already run by its affiliate Virgin Media in the UK.
Hennessy explained that by taking a 1960s property and analysing the fabrication the operator was able to see what was needed for good coverage. “In the UK market we’ve categorised about 30 types of property and we’re now building recommendations to the sales side,” he said. “It’s not only available to the sales but also to the customer care side as well.”
Earlier, Liberty Global CTO Balan Nair emphasised the importance of RDK to the group, describing it as a “very critical component”. Liberty also plans to deploy the new RDK-B for its broadband services. Nair continued that its middleware would also be harmonised because of plans to build in functionality from the Internet of Things.
