There were 19 million broadband connections in Romania of the end of last year, according to Catalin Marinescu, the president of the regulator ANCOM.
Of these, 14.7 million were mobile and 4.3 million fixed line.
Marinescu was speaking at an event entitled Digital Agenda for Romania, organised by Finmedia.
Over half of the fixed line connections allowed for download speeds of over 100 Mbps, which was unique for the EU, where only 11% of lines could do so as of mid-2015.
There was also record usage of fixed traffic in Romania, averaging 91 GB per line each month.
However, while penetration of fixed line broadband services in Romania in densely populated areas was close to the European average of 75%, it was only 45% compared to 62% in rural areas, with the gap between the latter increasing.
