In a wide-ranging interview with Rozhlas.cz, Zsolt Nagy, CTO of the national transmission company Towercom, said that the initial focus of the transition to DVB-T2 is very much the pay-DTT platform Plustelka.
It currently has between 15,000-16,000 subscribers and is gaining 400-500 more each month.
Although Nagy discussed the situation in the Czech Republic, he said the two were not comparable, with Slovakia currently undertaking technical discussions with regulatory authorities in neighbouring countries about what will form the network after 2020.
He also said that he expected DVB-T and DVB-T2 to overlap for around a year around 2019 and 2020.
Nagy said that DTT penetration in Slovakia currently stands at around 30% and has fallen slightly since the transition to digital broadcasting.
He also revealed that Towercom plans an Ultra HD stream of the Rio Olympic Games later this summer. However, he could not confirm if it would go ahead.
At the same time, he said that Towercom has an agreement in place with the Slovak public broadcaster to provide it with content for an Ultra HD trial that will start in late July or early August.
