The former chief executive of Ono cable and Wananchi Group has been charged with the murder of a woman found shot dead at his house in Kenya.
Appearing in court in Kibera, close to the capital Nairobi, Richard Alden was on Friday ordered to be detained until next Thursday when his application for bail application will be heard.
Alden, 53, denies the charges.
Evans Monari, who previously represented Alden, said business manager Grace Wangeci, 42, had died when a gun she was holding while taking a selfie went off. But his new lawyer said Alden was in another room when the incident occurred, meaning he could not have seen what happened.
The married father of three grown up children took Wangeci to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Unsubstantiated reports suggested Wangeci had been shot from behind.
In a statement to The Telegraph, Alden family advocate Tom Okundi said: “Richard has cooperated and continues to cooperate with the police in the investigation. We wish to request that the media and the public avoid speculation and allow the case to take its course
“The family of Richard Alden takes serious exception to the unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations concerning the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms. Grace Wangeci.”
