The Romanian government is set to change the law with an Emergency Ordinance in order to help the financially troubled public broadcaster TVR.
According to Mediafax, the action will probably be taken when the government next meets, with TVR’s debt to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) then being classified as a public liability.
This will allow the money to be repaid from the state budget without it being considered state aid.
As previously reported in Broadband TV News, the EBU took the extraordinary step this April of withdrawing member services from TVR following the non-payment of debts totaling CHF16 million (€14.57 million).
Last month, the EBU held talks with the Romanian government and TVR in order to help resolve the situation.
